Sign Post for Again and Again

Ane of the main texts we use to guide our reading teaching is the amazing Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading past Kylene Beers and Robert Probst.  This book provides usa with the foundation for having deeper reading conversations and a common language every bit we develop our thoughts.  While the book has fantabulous text ideas to utilize every bit mentor texts, I thought it would exist nice for my students  to use motion picture books on the very first day of a new strategy before we delve into the longer text excerpts.  I have therefore looked for moving picture books I could use with the different strategies and will publish posts as I have them for the 6 dissimilar strategies since I cannot be the only one looking for ideas.

The first post was on Contrast & Contradictions, and then followed Aha Moments, Tough Questions, Words of the Wiser, and now comes a tougher one to find picture books for Again and Again.

NEW Additions:

Brick by Brick by Charles R. Smith Jr. and illustrated by Floyd Cooper tells the little known story of how slaves were part of the structure of The White Firm.  Powerful read and powerful Once again and Again moments.

Back of the Motorcoach written past Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Floyd Cooper tells the story of Rosa Park'due south deed of courage from the  perspective of a little boy on the bus.  Powerful again and again when students discover the symbolism of the marble.

Amelia and Eleanor Go For a Ride written by Pam Munoz Ryan and illustrated by Brian Selznick has a few subtle Again and Again's and may therefore be better suited for when students have had some exposure to the strategy.

I admit that The North Star by Peter H. Reynolds was the start 1 that came to mind for this strategy of noticing when something is repeated again and once again.  Why?  Considering the cat becomes a symbol for and so many things in this book and is something that my students oft find.

With the simple line "Wintertime is coming" this picture book aptly titledWintertime is Coming past Tony Johnston and illustrated by Jim LaMarche is great for just starting out with the strategy since the line is piece of cake to spot and volition lead to good discussions about how the volume changes even though the line stays the aforementioned.

The Big Box by Toni Morrison and Slade Morrison illustrated by Giselle Potter has a lot of repetition making it an platonic candidate for again and again.  Because the words do not seem to mean much until you lot really start to think about their pregnant.  What is the symbolic meaning of the big box?

1 of the nearly beloved film books in our 7th course classroom isI Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen which due to the chapeau and the repeated phrases of the acquit and the rabbit are cracking for inferring based on the again and again moments.

Some other favorite isWolfie the Bunny by Ame Dyckman illustrated past Zachariah OHora when Dot the Rabbit keeps repeating that Wolfie will eat them all up.  This leads to some not bad word of why she would continue saying that and how we exercise the same as people when we judge.

The again and again moment may exist a fiddling harder to notice in the archetypeWhere the Wild Things Are past Maurice Sendak merely kids e'er recognize it when they reach the final page and the supper is however hot.  Why does this thing and how does it link in to earlier events?

A Sweet Aroma of Roses by Angela Johnson is a cute picture volume and the once more and again lies in the use of the color red as well as the phrase "Sweet aroma of roses…" throughout the book.

this beautiful new picture book,My 2 Blankets by Irena Kobold and Freya Blackwood keeps eluding to a blanket.  I dearest the metaphor that the coating (southward) correspond.

Blue on Blue by Dianne White and Beth Krommes has a fantastic again and again in the style the color words are used.  While non as obvious every bit an again and once again moment, I am looking forrad to seeing if students can discover the design.

We are about to outset our nonfiction focus for the year so I am so glad I found some nifty again and again moments inThe Boy Who Loved Math past Deborah Helligman with pictures past LeUyen Pham.  The fashion the numbers are colored throughout the pages will definitely catch the middle of students.

Equally always, I turned to the awesome Observe and Note customs on Facebook and asked them to share their favorites as well.  Hither they are.

Prove Way by Jacqueline Woodson.

Frog on a Log? by Kes Gray and Jim Field.

Fiddling Elliot Big City by Mike Curato

By Frog and Mouse past Deborah Freedman

Something Cute by Sharon Dennis Wyeth

Shortcut past Donald Crews

Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.

The Hat by Jan Brett

The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson

The Big Orangish Splot by Daniel Manus Pinkwater

As always, please add your favorites for Again and Once again in the comments.  Also, did you run into the new Find and Notation for Nonfiction?  I am so excited to read it.
